Brass handle samples may differ because they were produced from separate material lots, polishing conditions or finishing trials. Early samples are often made to verify shape and dimensions, while later samples are used to approve color and surface texture. Buyers should identify the purpose of each sample before comparing it with bulk production.

Why Sample Production Color Differences Occur
Common causes of sample production color differences include changes in surface preparation, chemical treatment and coating thickness. Brass can appear lighter after fine polishing and darker after coarser brushing. Antique finishes vary further because recessed areas are intentionally darkened while raised sections are highlighted.
Lighting also changes how metallic finishes appear. Warm lighting strengthens yellow tones, while cool lighting may make brass look duller or greener. Camera exposure and screen settings create additional distortion, making digital images unsuitable as the only approval reference.
Material and Tooling Can Change the Result
A prototype may be machined from bar material because production tooling is not ready. Mass-produced pieces may later be cast, forged or stamped. Even when both versions use brass, differences in surface texture can influence polishing and color.
Tooling corrections can also alter edge sharpness, decorative depth or base dimensions. These changes may be necessary for stable production, but they should be documented and approved before the sample is signed.
Hand Finishing Creates Natural Variation
Brushed, aged and antique effects often include manual work. The operator may polish raised areas, darken grooves or adjust the surface to match a reference. Minor variation is normal, but uncontrolled stains, random bright patches and visible coating defects should not be accepted as handmade character.
A practical approval method uses three physical references:

How to Approve Samples Correctly
Place several pieces together under the lighting used in the final space. Review color, gloss, texture and brushing direction from both close range and normal installation distance. Install one sample on the actual cabinet panel to check hole spacing, projection, base coverage and screw compatibility.

Moving From Sample to Production
Pre-production approval should confirm the drawing, brass construction, finish range, screw pack, packaging and inspection method. Any later change needs written confirmation because altering one detail may affect cost or appearance.
